In Marlee, I found all I needed in an advocate, and more.
I first met Marlee Cowan when we were introduced by phone in July 2018, for consultation on a contested guardianship matter. She had been recommended by a trusted friend in the DC area. At that time, my adult son was in crisis in a residential program in Idaho. The situation was highly stressful and difficult, particularly given that my son’s father is a litigator and was litigating every decision we were attempting to make. The complexities were beyond description – multiple parties, professionals, etc., all disagreeing with each other, stalling my son’s treatment and progress while he was 2500 miles from our home. It was chaos to an extreme. Because my son had been living in Massachusetts and his father was insisting on a return there, I needed to find an attorney who could (1) understand this mess that was years in the making, and (2) have the skills to help me navigate it for the best interests of my son. I am an attorney myself and work in the field of disabilities so may have more technical knowledge than an average parent, but for this matter, I was a mom and needed the most expert, seasoned, and compassionate help possible. Marlee spoke with me nearly a year before I actually needed her help in Massachusetts. In Marlee, I found all I needed in an advocate, and more.
Marlee was calm, reassuring, practical, and wise. She gave me excellent advice for being prepared for a change in venue. When it was time to engage her, she processed an enormous amount of information – hundreds of pages of incendiary pleadings from another proceeding, and digested it all into a practical and rational path forward, a seemingly impossible task. As only one example of many, I had been attempting for months – unsuccessfully – to obtain my son’s medical records, containing critical information, as his co-guardian. I had been denied access due to adversarial actions by my son’s father. Marlee cut through that in a few weeks time, navigating difficult parties with civil professionalism and ease, providing me the necessary access to which I was entitled under the law. I had been forced to spend tens of thousands of dollars attempting to assist my son in Idaho. For a fraction of that, Marlee actually accomplished it. As an attorney, I am well aware of the negative experiences many people have with the legal profession. I can truly say that Marlee’s handling of this matter had positive repercussions that went far beyond what she negotiated. In short, she made our lives better. While it may sound simplistic, this was fundamental – it made all the difference that she truly cared about my son – that was evident in every conversation we had and every action she ultimately took. As I reflect on her representation, I realize that because she handled everything with such calmness and thorough expertise, it helped me to relax and think, even during a crisis. Her professionalism, skill, and compassion allowed me to focus on what was necessary for me – helping my son through a very difficult experience. I am so grateful to have met her and for her representation. I cannot recommend her highly enough, on every level – as a compassionate and wise human being, and as an absolutely top-notch attorney. She is a credit to her firm and to the legal profession.
